Pool Filters
Pool filters are an important component of your swimming pool circulation and filtration system, ensuring that your water is safe, clean, and as pure as possible whenever the pool is in use. There are main three types of pool filters readily available for all types of swimming pools, and determining which pool filter is most suitable for you can be a lengthy process. The three types of pool filters are DE (Diatomaceous Earth), Sand, and Cartridge filters. DE is the most common types of pool filters used, followed by Sand, then Cartridge. The larger the filter, the higher quality the overall filtration system will be.
Sand filters are comprised of silicon sand that helps to trap dirt and maintain a steady backwash cycle. Sand can become solid and start to deposit itself in various parts of the piping system if backwashing does not occur on a regular basis. Each sand filter will have a multiport valve that has six different positions. The filter position is kept at 99% for the majority of the time, while the rinse, recirculate backwash, closed, and waste settings are used over the course of use. Sand filters make use of water that is pushed through a bed of filter sand, and then removed through tubes. Dirty water will naturally rise to the top, and clean water comes out of the bottom of the filter. Sand filters are inexpensively replaced, and will require little maintenance over the long term.
Diatomaceous Earth filters are the most efficient type of filter available. They use a pressure gauge to indicate that it needs backwashing. DE filter powder is distributed throughout the system, and will require an annual breakdown to clean out the filter grids. The powder used in these filters will help keep your swimming pool clean and help it rinse easily. You will need to backwash the filter several times before it begins to function at an optimal level. DE water filters are sometimes considered highly efficient water cleaners, as they can ‘sieve’ through large amounts of water to remove debris and particles.
Cartridge filters are the top choice most small pools and spas, and are very similar in construction to a pleated air filter used in cars or trucks. The cartridge can be easily removed from the tank, and pressure is used throughout the system to manage water balance. Backwashing cartridge filters may be a little more difficult than other types, but overall, it can result in significant advantages. Cartridge filters are economical and require little maintenance.
